This company started operating in the late nineteenth century, in Jersey City. It was located in a four-story building at 87 Ferry Street. Oscar Schmidt became a well known name in the music business, manufacturing a variety of instruments under the La Scala, Sovereign and Stella names (these brand names were purchased by Harmony in 1939). The company's name was later changed to Oscar Schmidt International and by the mid 1930s it was bankrupt. The business became known as as Fretted Instrument Manufacturers, and continued to operate at the Ferry Street address. The Oscar Schmidt name is still being used today, and is found on instruments manufactured outside this country.
